We take a look back at Jazz Hang, a collaboration between Tomorrow’s Warriors, Lewisham Music and Trinity Laban.

The London Jazz scene is on fire right now with artists like Mercury Prize-winners Ezra Collective, Nubya Garcia, Moses Boyd and Theon Cross tearing up stages and festivals, and performing around the world. Since 2023 – and with the support of London Music Fund – Lewisham Music have been working alongside Tomorrow’s Warriors and Trinity Laban to take The Jazz Hang to the next level.

The Jazz Hang is a series of regular sessions of informal and practical jazz learning aimed at young musicians aged 11-16 who are at an early stage in their engagement with Jazz and want to learn more about it, but don’t know where to start. Delivered by incredible music leaders the project offers young musicians the oppportunity to develop new skills, have access to masterclasses led by guest musicians, participate in jams, and perform in concerts.

Jazz Hang evaluation

The independent evaluation was led by youth evaluation specialist Arun Janssens, with the support of Jake Silver Fletcher from Trinity Laban.

The evaluation took a qualitative approach to explore the views and experiences of participants, support staff and music leaders to understand if and how Jazz Hang is making progress against the intended outcomes, identifying any barriers to success and making recommendations for improvements. Jazz Hang evaluation

“Since joining I know how to solo now, and my listening by ear has really improved. I can just listen to a song, and then I can figure out how to play it just like that.”

“I liked being able to play my instrument with professional musicians as well as others my age.”
