Exploring LGBTQ+ contributions to music in the south-east this LGBTQ+ History Month.

This LGBTQ+ History Month, young people from Lewisham Music will be creating a 2-hour radio special about the historic and present influence of LGBTQ+ musicians within the local music community and wider musical landscape in London.

Produced and presented by Radio Lewisham’s Micah and Rita, we will hear from the LGBTQ+ musicians currently leading the way in Lewisham, explore their experiences working as queer creatives in the borough, and ask how we can continue to reduce barriers for people from these communities. The show will also feature live performances from the artists.

Tune-in live on Thursday 26 February at 7pm

Creative Influence: LGBTQ+ contributions to music in the South-East, will be broadcast live on Lewisham Music’s award-winning youth-led radio station Radio Lewisham on Thursday 26 February at 7pm.

For this year’s LGBTQ+ History Month, Lewisham Music and Radio Lewisham would like to champion historic and ongoing creative contributions made by LGBTQ+ people in the area.

Lewisham Music is an award-winning youth charity, creating positive change in young peoples’ lives through diverse musical opportunities. The charity aims to always create inclusive programmes, keeping things low cost, free, and accessible across all abilities.

Radio Lewisham is the borough’s first youth-led station, broadcasting music and shows 24/7 all curated, produced and presented by young people across Lewisham. Radio Lewisham wants to show that cutting-edge curation and youth-driven formats can answer a hunger for fresh, authentic sounds and stories, whilst championing marginalised voices, promoting community engagement, local accountability, and cultural resilience.

This project encompasses these aims. As an organisation, we have noticed there a significant lack of Queer representation around South-East London, and particularly Lewisham, even though the Radio Lewisham playlist is full of established Queer artists. We would like to create a special radio programme to create visibility for LGBTQ+ creatives around the Lewisham Borough by giving them a platform to share their work and their experiences on with the local community.

The programme will be hosted by two Radio Lewisham presenters who are passionate in their support of local artists. They will interview local LGBTQ+ artists about their journey into creativity, the barriers they have faced, their achievements and their hopes for the future. The show will also feature live sessions from the artists.

LGBTQ+ History Month

February is LGBTQ+ History Month. This month is dedicated to observing the history and celebrating the rich culture of the LGBTQ+ community.

LGBTQ+ History Month is a time to recognise and celebrate the lives, contributions and achievements of LGBTQ+ people throughout history and across all areas of life. Since the first UK LGBTQ+ History Month in 2005, communities have come together to highlight the richness and diversity of LGBTQ+ experiences and to create spaces where everyone feels safe, seen and supported.

Creative Influence: LGBTQ+ contributions to music in the South-East has been kindly funded by Lewisham Council, click the button below to check out all the other events happening in Lewisham.
