Animate Orchestra offers young musicians in school years 5 to 13 opportunities to play together and create their own music in a ‘Young Person’s Orchestra for the 21st Century’.

Bringing together young people from a wide range of cultural backgrounds and musical interests, Animate courses are fun, sociable and musically adventurous. With specialist tutors and world-class musicians as mentors and guides, projects take place across the year – usually in school holidays or at weekends – and range from introductory 1-3 day local courses; more intensive performance projects, and; Animate Artists, exciting collaborations with other artists and art forms aimed at more experienced young musicians.

To take part you should…

  • live or go to school in the London Boroughs of Lambeth, Lewisham, Royal Greenwich or Southwark

  • be in school years 5 – 9

  • play an instrument of any kind and with any level of experience – we also welcome young people with skills in music technology

  • ideally have access to your own instrument

  • be motivated and enthusiastic about creating your own music

When’s the next Animate?

Taking place during school holidays, Animate Orchestra local courses usually run for 1 or 2 days and are open to everyone, regardless of ability or musical experience. Led by specialist tutors and world-class musicians, they introduce a range of creative skills (such as composition and improvisation) and musical skills (such as listening to and playing with others). At the end of each course the ensemble shares the music made in an informal performance to friends and family.

Animate Orchestra is run in partnership with Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. To find out more about Animate, upcoming projects and to explore previous projects please head over to Trinity Laban’s website.
